Laconia Firefighter's Rescue An Occupant On Christmas

Laconia, NH- City firefighters were able to save a occupant from a burning home on Christmas morning. The Lakes Region Communication Center started receiving calls for smoke coming from a commercial building at Union Ave and Zion Hill Road. Laconia Central and Weirs Station companies along with automatic mutual aid Engines from Gilford and Belmont were dispatched at 9:53 am. First due Laconia Central Companies arrived at 1105 Union Avenue and reported smoke showing from a 2 1/2 story commercial and residential building. This building house's the headquarters for the Laconia Motorcycle Week Association on the first floor and an apartment on the second floor. The first due Engine was met by a by-stander stating there was someone trapped in the second floor apartment. They immediately requested a Second Alarm and reported occupants trapped and going in for rescue. Firefighters entered the building and were met by heavy smoke conditions but were able to find the occupant inside and remove them to safety. The occupant was treated at the scene and refused transport. During firefighting operations on the first floor, a second occupant was reported unaccounted for, but it was determined they were not in the building. Crews found a significant amount of fire, which took approximately two hours to bring fully under control. Laconia Fire Chief Kirk Beattie reported this was a very labor-intensive fire for firefighters to fully extinguish. Assisting Laconia at the scene was, Gilford, Belmont, Meredith, Sanbornton, Tilton, Alton and Franklin Fire Departments along with the recall of off duty Laconia firefighters. One firefighter suffered a minor knee injury and was treated at the scene. The Red Cross is assisting the occupants from the apartment. The cause of the fire appears to be electrical in nature, but remains under investigation by the Laconia Fire Department and NH State Fire Marshal's Office.
