November 19, 2025 — Polk County Fire Rescue has been awarded a $16 million federal grant to fund 50 new positions, significantly strengthening emergency response capabilities across the county.

The funding comes through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant Program, administered by Federal Emergency Management Agency. The SAFER program is designed to help fire departments nationwide increase and maintain proper staffing levels, while also supporting compliance with response times and operational safety standards.

County officials said the additional positions will enhance frontline response, improve firefighter safety, and ensure PCFR can continue meeting the growing service demands of Polk County’s communities.

Department leadership called the award a major investment in public safety and a critical step in strengthening long-term emergency operations throughout the county.
