PATERSON, NJ - A four-alarm fire, occurring just hours after a three-alarm blaze was extinguished in the city, destroyed three structures and damaged two others, leaving nine families homeless on September 1st.

The fire was reported at 3:50 A.M. at 84-86 Marshall Street. Companies arrived to heavy fire in the rear of multiple two-and-a-half closely spaced dwellings that stretched around the corner on to Slater Street. Flames had extended into two of the structures and was showing from the second floor of both, and was into the attic and already through the roof.

Additional alarms were called in rapid succession and soon a fourth-alarm was called. A two-and-a-half inch line was stretched to the rear and made a substantial knock on the visible flames. The interior fire continued to spread and soon involved five buildings. Members were withdrawn for a short time as master streams made further progress. Companies returned to an interior attack on the buildings that were not compromised structurally.

The smoke condition improved and companies began to be released by 6:00 A.M. Three of the structures were raised the following day due to collapse concerns. No serious injuries were reported, and the cause is under investigation.
