NEW SCOTLAND, NY - One truck was destroyed and others were damaged after a fire at a highway garage in New Scotland.

Fire crews responded to a fully-involved dump truck at the Albany County Highway Garage on Friday, July 1st.

Fire departments were dispatched to the area of the Albany County 911 Dispatch Center at 449 New Salem Road at 9:30 P.M. for a possible structure fire. It was quickly determined to be a dump truck that was fully-involved on the property of the highway garage, located behind the dispatch center. Once fire crews gained access to the truck, they discovered that the truck that was on fire was in close proximity to some other trucks as well.

“Luckily, we were able to move the two trucks out of the way,” said Chief Steve Ayers of the New Salem Fire Department. “They did have some damage to them.”

Three handlines were pulled and crews got to work extinguishing the fire while another crew worked to cool the other trucks that had come in close proximity to the heat. Both trucks sustained some damage from the intense heat, but were moved before they could catch fire.

“On one of them the tire melted and some other damage,” Chief Ayers said. “The other one the fender and the windshield blistered, but they were savable and they’ll be able to repair them.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, however, it is reported that the vehicle had been worked on recently.

“It had been in for maintenance,” Chief Ayers said. “They didn’t say exactly which day it had been in, but it had been in for maintenance.”

The fire was knocked down within one hour.

“It was very hot,” Chief Ayers said. “It was really hard to keep the hydraulics cooled down and they were super hot.”

New Salem, Voorheesville and Onesquethaw Fire Departments responded to the scene with Albany County Sheriff’s Ambulance, Albany County Paramedics and the Albany County Sheriff’s Department.

There were no injuries reported on the scene. Crews returned to service after two hours.
