Litchfield, CT - Litchfield Fire around 01: 51 pm, in coordination with East Litchfield Fire Company on automatic mutual aid, was dispatched to Fernwood Rest Home for a fuel oil spill. Upon arrival, crews discovered a significant amount of fuel oil discharging from the sump pump. Bantam Fire Company, along with their HazMat trailer, and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) were requested to respond.
The spill was caused by a broken pipe connecting the fuel oil tanks in the basement, which allowed freshly filled tanks to leak into the basement. The sump pump then carried the fuel oil out of the basement and onto the roadway.
Fire crews deployed multiple sorbent booms to contain the spill and used sorbent pads on the basement floor to absorb the remaining oil. The scene was subsequently turned over to CT DEEP, and all fire units cleared the scene around 4:20 PM.
