January 24, 2026 — Buxton Fire-Rescue and multiple mutual aid departments responded to a third-alarm structure fire Saturday afternoon at a two-story residence on Justin Merrill Road.
Crews were dispatched at approximately 12:53 p.m. after reports of a working fire. First-arriving officers encountered heavy smoke and fire conditions, with flames visible from the structure. Command was established, and a second alarm was quickly struck, followed by a third alarm as fire spread rapidly through the building.
Firefighters initiated an aggressive interior attack, encountering severe fire conditions on the first floor, including exploding ammunition and fire extension into concealed spaces. Despite suppression efforts, the fire spread due to the building’s balloon-frame construction, strong winds, and extreme cold temperatures. All occupants were confirmed out of the residence.
Given the rural location without pressurized hydrants, water supply operations were established using tanker shuttles, with multiple engines drafting from nearby dry hydrants. Crews were rotated frequently for rest and warming due to weather conditions.
In total, the response included seven engines, eight tankers, four ladder trucks, two ambulances, and a Rapid Intervention Team. The fire was brought under control by early evening. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s Office.
Buxton Fire-Rescue expressed appreciation to the assisting fire departments, emergency medical services, law enforcement, dispatchers, and support personnel who contributed to the operation.
