HACKENSACK, NJ - At 12:32 A.M. on an extremely cold and windy December 26th, Hackensack firefighters were sent to 64 Prospect Ave. for an activated fire alarm.

As companies responded, numerous calls were received from the large four-story brick OMD reporting a fire. Units found a working fire in a second floor apartment with residents evacuating and on fire escapes. A second-alarm was transmitted, followed quickly by a third.

Residents on the fire escape dropped two children to firefighters below. Ground ladders rescued others and provided access for members. Multiple lines were stretched in the front door, as well as to the top floor via the exterior in the rear. Three Hackensack ladders, as well as Ridgefield Park and Hasbrouck Heights were extended to the roof.

Members made a push and quickly had the fire in the apartment knocked down. Overhaul and a check of all floors found no extension. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported, but five apartments were deemed uninhabitable. Teaneck, Bogota, Hasbrouck Heights, Ridgefield Park and Maywood assisted at the scene. Englewood was called to the scene, but was involved in a MVA and was unable to respond.
