NJ APPARATUS OF THE MONTH
By John M. Malecky February, 2007
FIRST PIERCE VELOCITY IN STATE WILL GO TO LODI
Before I commence with the latest apparatus news I want to dedicate this report to two dear friends who recently passed away. Artie Knobloch, who passed away in November was a longtime friend and an avid firefighter and buff. He was the current vice president of the New Jersey Metro Fire Photographers and also had served as president. He was also a past chief of the Hasbrouck Heights Volunteer Fire Department. Also, Martin “Bud” Smock, owner of P.L. Custom Emergency Vehicles and Rescue 1, who passed away in December. Bud was one of the pioneers of modular ambulance design which today is most prominently used by just about all ambulance manufacturers. May they rest in peace! Getting back to the headline, at the time of this writing, Fire & Safety Services was expecting to sign a contract with the Lodi Volunteer Fire Department in Bergen County for a 100 foot Pierce platform on the new Velocity chassis. Now before you think that Pierce has added yet another chassis to its list, I must inform you that this is not the case. This chassis will be replacing the Lance, Dash, Enforcer and Saber chassis and will be bringing to the industry what Pierce claims is the result of the list of things we in the fire service felt were practical things that would make a truck easier to use, have increased safety and visibility, clutter and storage management, better seating, more interior space and easier routine maintenance access. It will be the first custom fire truck chassis with frontal airbags. Some features include: increased storage spaces, dual length seat belts and dual retractors, overall visibility Pierce mirrors, single piece bonded windshield, three wiper blades and 85% clearance, command zone advanced electronics, fast access service tilt front hood, 2007 emission compliant engines up to 525 hp., rotomolded panels and console, larger doors, TAK-4 independent front suspension, Pierce PS6 seats, built-in side roll protection, large door handles, hub piloted wheels, door- to- door flat floor, hands free SCBA holders, check/fill access in engine tunnel, seating up to 10 and 13 3/8 inch frame rails. Fire & Safety also reports an order for an Enforcer pumper from Northfield (Atlantic County) and the delivery of an Arrow XT, 2,000 gpm pumper to the Skyline Lakes VFC, Ringwood (Passaic County.) Fire Apparatus Repair has delivered the first Sutphen SPH-100 midmount platform to Clementon in Camden County. It has a 230 inch wheelbase, Caterpillar C13, 485 hp diesel engine, Hale, Qmax 2,000 pump, stainless ateel modular body, six seat custom cab, Safety Vision dual camera system, full LED light package, 300 gallon water tank, one electric and one manual nozzle in platform, 1,000 pound pay load, 2,000 gpm flow from platform, Stokes basket setup in platform, 10 kw hydraulic generator, three preconnected crosslays , painted ROM roll-up doors, four-inch electric discharge on officer side, Hale master intake valves, stainless steel pump plumbing, custom map box and custom shelving and mounting provide by the dealer.
