At 20:55 on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010, the Lebanon Rescue Department, Maine State Police and Lebanon Fire Department were dispatched to Ridgewood Drive in North Lebanon for the report of two trucks that had gone through the water on Northeast Pond. Rescue crews evaluated and signed off both drivers for hypothermia symptoms. Both drivers were alone in their vehicles and refused transport to the hospital. A skidder was used to remove one of the vehicles, a Ford Explorer as rescue crews arrived. The other vehicle, a Toyota truck, was still out on the ice in about 3 feet of water. Fire and rescue crews are working on the scene assisting the vehicle owner try to remove it. "The ice is very thin around a ridge where the vehicles went through. Fortunately, the water is only about 3 feet deep in that part of the lake. Both drivers were in the water for about 10 minutes before being able to get out. One driver hasn't been evaluated yet as he left the scene prior to emergency crews arriving. We expect to be on the scene for a while making sure everyone is safe removing the vehicle." Assistant Rescue Chief Jason Cole advised. "It was reported to us that the Ford Explorer had tried to cross Northeast Pond and got about 150 feet off shore and went through. The Toyota truck then went to try to help get it out and also went through."
As of 11:55pm, all Lebanon Rescue and Fire units have cleared the scene. After nearly 3 hours of attempting to remove the 2nd vehicle with a skidder and chains, the vehicle has been left overnight until a tow truck can assist tomorrow morning. Nothing appeared to be leaking from the vehicle.
The driver of the Ford Explorer returned to the scene and was evaluated by rescue personnel. He was a 31 year old male from Milton, NH.
The driver of the 1993 Toyota Truck that went through the ice while trying to assist the Ford Explorer was a 29 year old male also from Milton, NH. Both patients were cold and wet but refused transport to the hospital for further evaluation.
On Wednesday, February 24th, rescue crews returned to the scene and the truck was being removed by the vehicle owner and several friends using a skidder. No additional injuries were reported and no environmental damage was noted.
Maine State Police are investigating the incidents.
