The 2008 International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial Service was held on Saturday, September 20, 2008 in Colorado Springs, CO. Each September, the IAFF conducts a solemn ceremonial service at the Fallen Fire Fighter Memorial and Wall of Honor to honor the IAFF member firefighters and paramedics who have made the supreme sacrifice the previous year (June 1, 2007 - June 1, 2008).
The Memorial, which is located in the shadow of Pike’s Peak, now bears an additional 136 names of IAFF members who died in the line-of-duty from the United States and Canada. Back in 1986, the IAFF completed this permanent tribute to its members. The centerpiece of the Memorial is a bronze likeness of a fire fighter descending a ladder while cradling an infant in one arm. Towering 20 feet above the park’s surface, “Somewhere, Everyday” epitomizes the courage and bravery displayed daily by IAFF members across the continent.
Held in conjunction with the Memorial is the annual "Ride to Remember" sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Wind & Fire Motorcycle Club. The “Ride” brings firefighter riders from across North America to Lakewood, CO to honor the Fallen. It starts at the Colorado Fallen Firefighters Memorial and the large motorcycle and fire apparatus procession travels to the IAFF Fallen Fire Fighters Memorial. The majority of riders dress in Class A or service uniforms and observe the honors at Memorial Park.
The Wall of Honor displays the names of 2,125 firefighters who have died in the line of duty since 1976. The IAFF plans to include all member firefighters who have perished since the union was founded in 1918.
