LEBANON, ME - On Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at 4:55 p.m., the Lebanon Rescue Department, Lebanon Fire Department and Maine State Police responded to a single vehicle accident with injury on Center Road about one mile in from Carl Broggi Highway.
A Dodge Stratus was traveling north on Center Road when the driver possibly suffered a medical event and left the roadway, striking a telephone pole head on. While emergency crews were enroute to the scene, the dispatch center was receiving multiple calls reporting that the driver was trapped in the vehicle and the vehicle was on fire. When emergency crews arrived on scene, they located the driver, who had been removed from the car by bystanders, sitting in a bystanders car. A passing motorist had used a neighbors fire extinguisher to extinguish a fire under the hood of the car. Fortunately the driver did not suffer serious injuries and she was transported to Goodall Hospital in Sanford. The patient was wearing her seatbelt and the airbags deployed.
The driver of the vehicle was a 75 year old female from Center Lebanon. She was alone in the vehicle.
The force of the accident caused the telephone pole to break off at the bottom of the pole. Live power wires went across Center Road and Center Road was closed from the intersection of Carl Broggi Highway to Lower Cross Road. Traffic was re-routed.
Responding to the scene were the following apparatus: two first response/command vehicles with Lebanon Rescue, Lebanon Rescue #1 and Lebanon Engine #2
The Dodge suffered extensive damage and had to be towed from the scene. Emergency crews left the scene around 6:15pm and the road was re-opened.
Power is still out in the area and crews from Central Maine Power are still on scene attempting to restore the power and replace the broken pole.
