HAZLET, N.J. - A full-scale Wildland Fire Drill was held during the morning of Saturday, November 18, at Natco Lake Park in Hazlet. This mock drill simulated an out-of-control wildfire that was spreading east towards homes off of Laurel Avenue.
Many engine strike teams, consisting of local fire companies, were deployed to different streets to protect area homes. This exercise tested communications, rapid deployment of strike teams and overall structural protection. A N.J. Forest Fire Service helicopter provided an aerial platform for the command staff.
Natco Lake Park is a heavily wooded, 260-acre preserve with a strong pine barrens environment. A serious Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) problem exists here as well as many other communities in the state. Natco Lake Park can be closely compared to the Pine Barrens region of central and southern New Jersey. In this type of environment, disaster can strike if certain fire conditions are met. Mainly the weather.
This drill was a joint effort between the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, Monmouth County Fire Marshal's Office and the Hazlet Twp. Fire Dept.
Participating fire departments included Aberdeen, Keyport, Matawan, Middletown and Old Bridge.
