Firefighters work at extinguishing the blaze at the Mountain Top Historical Society on Rt. 23A in Haines Falls NY.
GREENE COUNTY, NY - On June 18 the Haines Falls fire department in the Catskill Park area of Greene County responded to a working fire at the Mountain Top Historical Society building on Route 23A. A motorist passing by the historic building called in the fire to the Greene County Fire control center in Cairo.
When Haines Falls fire chief Edward P. Dibbell arrived on scene, he found heavy smoke pouring from the second floor and immediately called fire control requesting additional mutual aid companies. Responding to assist Haines Falls were, Hunter fire department with a tanker and an engine, Tannersville with all units, Pallenville with manpower only and Tannersville Rescue Squad. Greene County fire coordinator Gary Goodrich also responded to the scene.
Chief Dibbell said that the fire was contained to the second floor and there was water and smoke damage on the first floor. The busy route 23A was reduced to a single lane of traffic to allow for a tanker shuttle operation.
A severe thunderstorm had moved through the area, and lightning was determined to be the cause of the blaze. The fire was investigated by five members of the Greene County fire investigation unit, and there were no reported injuries. This was Haines Falls fifteenth call for the year.
