NORTH LEBANON, ME - The Lebanon Rescue Department, York County Sheriff’s Department and Lebanon Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident with serious injury on Sunday afternoon, May 31, 2009. The accident was reported at 10:56 a.m. on the Milton Mills Road, about a quarter mile from the Bakers Grant Road in North Lebanon.
The ambulance and rescue crews arrived within four minutes of the accident and found the patient on the side of the road being treated by bystanders. Captain Natasha Kinney established EMS Command.
“A 2002 Ford F250 pick-up truck was traveling south on the Milton Mills Road when it left the roadway, striking a large rock and then a tree. The tree then fell into the road closing both lanes of the road. After striking the tree, the vehicle rolled over a few times and landed on its wheels. Both passenger side doors and the complete frame were torn off the vehicle and was located about 50 feet from where the vehicle landed. The roof of the cab broke the passenger seat when it crushed down onto it. In 21 years of responding to accidents, it’s one of the most seriously damaged vehicles I have seen. Neighbors who gathered at the scene while emergency crews worked were shocked that anyone survived the accident. It appears the driver was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident.” Assistant Chief Jason Cole advised.
The driver was brought to Goodall Hospital in Sanford by Lebanon Ambulance One at the advanced life support level and then transferred by Lebanon Ambulance to the trauma center at Maine Medical Center. His injuries are potentially life threatening.
The driver of the truck was a 31-year-old male from Acton, Maine. He was alone in the vehicle.
The vehicle had a large diesel leak and the fire department worked at the scene to control the hazards. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection arrived on scene to assist at 12:12.
The Lebanon Road Commissioner was notified to come to the scene to remove the tree that had fallen due to the accident. Also, a "speed limit 25” sign was damaged in the accident.
Milton Mills Road was closed for about two hours while emergency crews worked at the scene and the sheriffs department investigated the accident.
Deputies Matt Gilman and Jason Solomon of the York County Sheriff’s Department are investigating the accident.
