A tree broke a hole in the roof and broke several trusses on a Dirmitt Avenue home in Island Heights. The residents were inside when the storm did this.

ISLAND HEIGHTS, NJ - On Friday, July 31, 2009 members of the Island Heights Fire Department were arriving at their firehouse for a drill when the night’s activities changed.
Around 6:30 p.m. a swift-moving storm wreaked havoc throughout the Island Heights, Toms River and Bayville areas causing flooding, trees down, power outages and several roadways to be closed.
Island Heights Fire Department (Ocean County Station 53) responded to several calls in the boro and to surrounding Toms River Township. Chief Andy Parks (5300), Assistant Chief Ken Balfrey (5310) engine 5301 and 5311 and 5304 responded to numerous jobs that involved cars crushed by trees, houses with trees fallen on top of them and up rooted trees falling into yards, roads and swimming pools. There were branches all over and energized power wires down mixed in trees with several homes and cars destroyed.
Fire, police and emergency personnel worked through the night to clean up the mess and assure safety of the residents. Power outages and several roadways were still closed at 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.
