LEBANON, ME - The Lebanon Rescue Department, Maine State Police and Lebanon Fire Department responded to an ATV accident with injuries on Saturday afternoon, July 18, 2009. The accident occurred near 442 Lower Guinea Road and was reported around 2:55 p.m.
Initial reports advised there were two children involved and injured. A second ambulance from Frisbie Memorial Hospital was started.
'When Lebanon Rescue crews arrived, they located a 12 year old and 13 year old males that had been involved in a single ATV Accident. They reported that they were traveling east on Lower Guinea Road when they lost control of the ATV on the dirt road and struck a mailbox. The ATV then continued and rolled over. The 13 year old passenger stated he was able to jump off and the 12 year old driver stated he was thrown off the ATV before it rolled over after striking the mailbox. Neither had the 4 wheeler run over them. Fortunately, both boys were wearing safety helmets, which appears to have helped save them from serious injuries. The helmets showed quite a bit of damage." Assistant Chief Jason Cole stated.
Captain Natasha Kinney arrived on scene and was the command officer of the scene.
The 12-year-old driver was taken to Goodall Hospital in Sanford with what appear to be non-life threatening injuries.
The 13-year-old passenger was treated at the scene by Lebanon Rescue EMT's but was released to his parents with minor injuries.
Rescue crews were on scene until about 4:15 p.m.
The vehicle was a yellow 2000 Honda 250 4-wheeler and was towed from the scene.
Trooper Fenderson of the Maine State Police is investigating the accident.
This is the second ATV accident involving children that the Lebanon Rescue Department has responded to in the past few weeks.
