WEBSTER, MA - Residents of a Webster neighborhood were rudely awakened early Saturday morning, as an explosion rocked them out of bed and an eerie illumination shone bright in the night sky.
At approximately 2:18 a.m., residents in the area of Park Avenue, Nelson Street and Cody Street stated that they heard an explosion so loud and violent; they thought one of their neighbor’s houses had exploded. As they looked out their windows, they found that a garage near the corner of Nelson and Cody streets was totally engulfed in fire. A sports utility vehicle parked in front of the garage was also burning furiously. For a short time, the fire threatened the single family home at 26 Nelson St. The origin of the explosion is currently under investigation.
First to arrive on scene were the Webster police, who shut down Cody Street and remove residents that they felt may be in jeopardy if the fire spread. As Webster firefighters arrived on scene, they concentrated on knocking down the heavy fire that had spread throughout the two stall garage, and was now eating its way through several utility sheds at the rear of the garage.
Other fire personnel began cutting down fences to access the fire in the now involved sheds. Firefighters flanked the fire on both sides of the structures, and as quickly as it began, the fire was knocked down. Extensive overhaul of the interior of all buildings involved would be needed before the fire was completely extinguished.
One Webster firefighter was treated and transported by Webster EMS for smoke inhalation, though his injury was not serious. There were no other injuries. The fire totally destroyed the SUV, the garage, and the sheds, but the main house was spared of any damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation by members of the Webster Fire Department.
