SCHUYLKILL CO. – At 0120 hours on Wednesday, January 02, the Shenandoah Fire Department was out working at an oil burner malfunction in the 100 block of E. Center Street. At this time, Schuylkill County Communications notified Chief 740 that PD received a call from a non-English speaking individual saying, “fire fire,” one block away at 26 South Grant Street.
The Chief redirected an engine to this location and a minute later the department was paged for a working structure fire at this location. Units arrived on scene to find heavy fire in the end unit of a row home.
Crews from Station 745 (Hookies) immediately went to the roof and began cutting ventilation holes while other crews began to stretch hand lines. Initially an exterior attack was performed for twenty minutes and then an interior attack was started.
Chief 740 requested additional crews from Altamont, Englewood, Shenandoah Heights, William Penn, and West End Mahanoy City.
With the quick response from the Shenandoah Fire Department, the fire was held to the initial building with minimal extension into the southern exposure.
