NEWBURGH - About 9:10 p.m. Thurs. Apr.21, firefighters in the City of Newburgh responded to an alarm of fire in a three-story brick frame building at 183 Chambers St. Upon arrival, the third floor had a heavy fire condition in windows on the front of the building. Incident Commander, Assistant Chief Dennis Carpenter sounded a second alarm. Firefighters immediately proceeded to conduct a search of the building for life and confirmed that everyone had safely evacuated the burning structure. Crews simultaneously began ventilation and fire suppression operations with a roof crew dispatched by the aerial ladder truck and an engine crew stretching two 1 ¾” hand lines for an offensive interior attack.
Firefighters worked quickly and were able to contain the flames from spreading and spared the property from any further damage.
The rest of Newburgh did not sleep during this time though. Mutual aid companies from Cronomer Valley and Goodwill in the Town of Newburgh responded to three other alarms in the city during this incident and a fourth alarm was handled by a secondary crew from the NFD. This operation concluded with an overhaul, cause and origin investigation and the scene was secured in just under three hours. There were no injuries reported.
