GLEN RIDGE, N.J. - The New Jersey Deputy Fire Chiefs Association honored 1st Responder Newspaper Correspondent Bill Tompkins at their 15th Annual Awards Dinner, which was held at the Glen Ridge Country Club, on November 17.
Mr. Tompkins was recognized for “Mother saves disabled Son from flames in Paterson”, an article and supporting photo of fire department operations in Paterson, N.J., which appeared in the August 2006 edition of the 1st Responder Newspaper.
In addition, the following awards were presented: President’s Award - Robert Block and Christopher Cooper, authors of “Disaster: Hurricane Katrina and the Failure of Homeland Security”; Legislator of the Year Award - Assemblyman John F. McKeon, for support of New Jersey’s Fire Service; Deputy Chiefs Award - Ms. Eileen Fish, coordinator, Union Plus Program, Chase Financial, for support of Fire Prevention Programs and the New Jersey Fire Service; and the Fire Officer of the Year- Fire Chief Don Huber (ret.) presently chief of staff, Division of Fire Safety, for his advancement of Fire Service Communications.
Association Awards were presented to the following media: Richard E. Benfield, Editorial Page editor, The Record, for “Lessons Learned”, an editorial supporting increased dormitory fire safety (April 2, 2006); Richard Cowen, staff writer, Beth Balbierz, staff photographer, Liz Roberts, staff artist, The Record, for “Firefighter health, a cause for alarm”, an article on firefighter health that will promote health and fitness for the fire service (April 23, 2006); Steven Lemongello, staff writer, Martin Ceperley, staff photographer, The Jersey Journal, for “Dropped cigarette may have started flames”, an article that shows the danger of discarded cigarettes (April 17, 2006); Mike Frassinelli, staff writer, Matt Rainey, staff photographer, The Star Ledger, for "Fatal blaze strikes senior apartments”, an article on fire department operations during a fatal apartment fire (May 4, 2006); Matthew J. Dowling, staff writer, Patti Sapone, staff photographer, The Star Ledger, for “Rescue turns into double tragedy”, an article on a firefighter death in a failed rescue attempt (April 12, 2006); Robert Scollan, photographer, Fire News, “Fatal fire rages in Jersey City”, for action photos during a fatal fire in Jersey City, N.J.
The New Jersey Deputy Fire Chiefs Association is an association of New Jersey Career Battalion and Deputy Fire Chiefs. The association was founded in 1992 to bring Battalion and Deputy Fire Chiefs together to discuss common problems and solutions.
