NEWBURGH, NY - A recent news article in the Times Herald Record (Middletown, NY) featured a story about the amount of accidents in the area of Route 52 also locally known as South Plank Road. Add this one to the tab. On Monday night, Aug. 8, the Orange Lake Fire Department was holding their monthly meeting when they were dispatched for a serious motor vehicle accident in that area of Route 52 and Delaware Road. Units were dispatched at 9:27 p.m. with Orange Lake's heavy rescue, engine, and a utility responding to the scene.
Upon arrival by Orange Lake's Chief Charlie Piper, it was ascertained that there was serious injury with some entrapment involved. A Medevac helicopter was requested immediately which brought in nearby Winona Lake Fire Department with their engine to set up a landing zone at Orange Lake's firehouse.
As the helicopter arrived, it ran into mechanical problems while circling above the area. It was then called off at that time thus requiring ground transport by ambulance.
The Town of Newburgh Police and Ambulance Corps, along with State Police and Mobile Life Support paramedics responded to the scene. According to Town Police who are investigating, the driver of the 1994 Dodge Caravan, Michael Taylor, 57, of Newburgh, was eastbound on Route 52 when he careened into a ditch and rolled into a telephone pole then coming to a rest in another ditch. The pole which was struck required service from Central Hudson Gas and Electric who also responded with crews to the scene.
With the seriousness of the accident scene unfolding, it was noted how fortunate things turned out since there were no other passengers.
Taylor was transported by Town of Newburgh Ambulance Corps to St Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie. Town Police report that the accident is under investigation with tickets or charges pending.
Orange Lake Fire Police closed down Route 52 in both directions for well over an hour while extrication and disentanglement took place. No other injuries were reported.
