Newburgh firefighters battle flames in hot weather

Battling an 85 degree summer day in full bunker gear means guarding against heat exhaustion.

NEWBURGH, NY - At 10:58 a.m. on Fri. July 1, the City of Newburgh Fire Department was called to an alarm of fire in a structure at 115 Dupont Avenue. The first engine on the scene, from the city’s west end firehouse, arrived and reported a “smoke showing” condition.

Moments later Incident Commander, Assistant Chief Chris Barrett came on the scene and informed the city dispatcher that there was a heavy fire condition on the second floor and attic of a two-story wooden frame house. Chief Barrett immediately sounded a second alarm.

A FAST team from the Air National Guard at Stewart Air National Guard Base was called to the scene for mutual aid. Orange County Deputy Fire Coordinator Reyn Randolph and City of Newburgh Chief Jim Merritt provided assistance and the fire was brought under control in approximately one hour.

The outstanding teamwork of the city firefighters was slowed but not hampered by scorching 85 degree temperatures as the operation was executed without further incident.
