HENRICO,Va- The Boy Scouts of America Learning for Life Henrico County Fire Explorer Post 651 took first place in the annual Fire Explorer Challenge on Saturday, February 18th, 2012. Henrico Fire Explorer Post 651 took the Championship for the second time in three years. The competition was held in James City, Virginia. Fire Explorer Post 651 competed against James City Post 911 and Norfolk Post 116.
The fire explorer competition is based on the Scott Firefighter Challenge where firefighters compete in five events that simulate actual firefighting job functions. All events are completed wearing full firefighting protective clothing and self contained breathing apparatus. The six events for this year’s competition were High Rise simulation, Keiser Sled, Dress Out, Knots, Victim Drag and Hose Advancement.
Each competing explorer post would have three members of the team complete in each event. The three competing times would be averaged for a team time. Each event awards three points to the first place team, two points to the second place team, and 1 point to the third place team. A bonus point was awarded for the best individual in each event.
Henrico Fire Explorer Post 651 spent over a year and countless hours training for the competition. Their motto throughout was: Bring it home! In true Henrico sportsmanship fashion, Henrico’s explorers cheered on their brother team mates as well as their competitors.
With the win comes the honor of hosting the 2013 Fire Explorer challenge.
Henrico Fire Explorer Post Advisors are Firefighter Kevin M. Jones, Firefighter Nick Hart, Firefighter Jim Mullin, Firefighter Rob Rowley and Mrs. Brenda Kapelewski.
