WEST MAHANOY TOWNSHIP, PA - On February 8, 2008 at 11:50 pm the West Mahanoy Township Fire Department (Three Stations), Shenandoah Fire Department (Three Stations), Lost Creek and Shenandoah Ambulances were dispatched to 2 Lost Creek Road in Village of Lost Creek for a possible house fire. The Shenandoah Chief 749 arrived in a minutes and found smoke and flames coming from the B and C side of the home. The fire continued to spread quickly and began to move through out the 2 ½ story home.
Engine 888 and Squirt 745 arrived on scene first and found a working fire. Shenandoah Columbia Hose Engine 742 established a water supply from the hydrant in front of the residence and assisted with the offensive attack to stop the fire. Altamont Engine 367 staged in front of the home and sent its crew to assist the first arriving engines. Engine 367 pumped from a portable tank and feed the attacking units. The additional engines crews backed up the attack crew and attempted to entered the residence to stop the spreading fire. Engine 888 established a second water supply and attacked the residence with additional hose lines on the D side. Squirt 745 staged in front of the home and sent its elevated master stream into service attacking the second floor.
Incident Command requested additional tankers and manpower to respond to the scene to assist with the fire. The Shenandoah Heights and Polish American Fire Company responded to the scene and its crews provided support operations and assisted with water supply operations. The smoke and fire conditions increased in the home and the crews had to go to a defensive attack. Tankers trucks from Mahanoy City, Union Township, North Union Township, East Union Township, Gordon and Butler Township provided additional water. A refill site was established at the high school and rural water supply operations were conducted.
The fire was under controlled in less than two hours and all hot spots were out. The fire chief believes the fire started in the middle of the home and does not appear to be suspicious in origin. The fire chief reported that there were no injuries of fire fighters and the home is destroyed.
It was later determined that two residents were unaccounted for and a search was conducted for any victims. The search was called off till day light hours due to safety issues of the searchers. The victims bodies were then located in the shell of the burnt out building the next morning. The fire is now under the investigation of the Pennsylvania State Police.
