Churchville, NY- On a picture perfect Monday evening, the Churchville Fire Department broke ground on it's long awaited new facility. After three years of planning, some intense moments and a little controversy, the new building is slated for completion in Spring of 2009.
The new building will be 18,000 square feet, and will include offices, meeting and training rooms, five front bay doors, with three being drive through with an estimated cost of 4 million dollars. The new firehouse will be located at the corner of SR 36 and SR 33 also known as Main St. and Washington St. The land was acquired from Zuber Farms. In addition to the firehouse there will be plenty of parking, something the current facility does not have. There will also be a concrete pad for auto extrication training and plans for an outbuilding that will be used for training as well.
Site work begins this week, and the new structure will be enclosed by mid September according to LeChase Construction project managers who were present for the ceremonial ground breaking and provided the gold shovels.
"It's a long time coming and truly needed" said Safety Officer Scott Lancaster who has also served as Past Chief. Those same sentiments were echoed by nearly every firefighter in the organization. The original firehouse that was built 117 years ago in the agricultural community was used until 60 years ago when the current building was built.
President Steve Gulvin presided over the ceremony and acknowledged that "the building doesn't make the firehouse - these people make the firehouse" referring to almost every volunteer that attended. "It's taken three years, at least one night a week, countless hours and a committee of ten people to bring this to reality" said Gulvin. "We came up with a good plan, and are bring it to life" said Deputy Chief Jim Kurycki.
By the Numbers: Churchville Fire Department consists of 70 members, responds to 600 calls for service each year in 35 square miles of predominantly agriculture community with some light commercial occupancies and residential developments. They operate four fire suppression apparatus, one Chief's car, and one BLS ambulance. They are located in the southwest corner of Monroe County, NY.
