ORANGE LAKE, N.Y. – On Wed. Oct. 11, the Dan Leghorn Engine Co #1 held a Family Night and Open House at its station on Route 52 as part of Fire Prevention Week, which this year is from Oct. 8-14 at firehouses and in schools around the country.
Several area departments assisted in the presentations, which were a real hit with the kids. The Middle Hope FD had their talking fire truck, Little Squirt, and Sparky the Fire Dog.
The Coldenham FD had their 1953 Mack pumper on display and Plattekill Fire Rescue had their robotic vehicles on display.
Dan Leghorn Firefighter Charles Lanzer Jr. gave a talk to the children about how to exit a home during a fire, how to stop, drop and roll, as well as a discussion and demonstration on fire extinguisher safety.
The night's activities culminated with a car fire demonstration in the rear of the firehouse, which was a huge hit despite the rainy night.
