Shortly after 1300hrs on Tuesday June 10, 2008 Ocean County Communications Center received a call reporting a brush fire near the main gate of the Oyster Creek Power Plant. Forked River Station 60 was dispatched and upon arrival Chief Kevin Flynn found a large area of brush burning between the intake creek and the fuel storage tanks & pumps.
The initial fire attack was delayed due to the presence of concrete security barricades. Members of FRFD and the NJ Forestry Service using winches on the brush units were able to move the barricades to make entry to the field just north of the plant. Forked River units 6019, 6029 and NJFS units B20 & B35 made a quick attack on the fire containing it to approximately 2 acres. FRFD units 6031 & Tanker 6008 set up a filling station in the north parking lot for the brush units.
The cause of the fire is believed to be sparks from overhead power lines. The secure perimeter of the power plant as well as the main buildings was never in danger due to the winds at the time of the fire and the rapid response of all units. The Oyster Creek Power Plant does have a Fire Brigade for any incidents inside the secure area for which Forked River Station 60 is the Back Up
