ASBURY, NJ - On Friday February 29, 2008 at 8:51 pm, the Asbury Fire Company (58 Fire) was dispatched for a working barn fire at the intersection of Old Main Street and Asbury / Bloomsbury Road.
Upon arrival, Asbury’s Chief George Young 58-60 reported a fully working two story barn fire with live arcing power lines and assumed command. 58-60 immediately requested the 1st due tanker task force, power company, and had 58-62 and its manpower initiate a defensive attack on the B side of the building protecting another barn (exposure) that is used for boarding horses. Command also requested a fill engine at the nearby river for the tankers.
Franklin Township (57 Fire) upon arrival with 57-69 set up aerial operations at which time Chief 58-60 requested second due tankers and an additional BLS from Hampton Boro (13 Rescue) along with 56 Rescue already on scene. Approximately 45 minutes into the call, Asst Chief Mike Denney 58-70 advised command of a potential collapse of the building and all operations were pulled back out of the collapse zone while aerial operations continued. Just about 5 minutes after operations were pulled back the building collapsed.
Operations continued and the fire was knocked down and extinguished at approximately 10:45 pm. Some of the mutual aid companies that responded were Franklin Township, Washington Township, Washington Boro, Hampton Boro, Pattenburg, Glen Gardner, Bloomsbury, Butler Park, Franklin Rescue, and Hampton Rescue to name a few. Command was terminated and all units were cleared at 23:40 Hrs.
