JAMESBURG, NJ - Firefighters and their families, along with apparatus buffs, braved the heat and humidity of June 27, 2010 and enjoyed the Tri-Counties Fire Association's annual muster at Thompson County Park. Fifty-five vehicles showed up, either under their own power or on flat bed trucks. There was a short parade and some of the pumpers then conducted drafting operations from Lake Manalapan. The rigs were judged and awards were given out at the end of the day.
Some fully restored classics were present such as East Brunswick Independent Fire Co. 2's 1940 Ward LaFrance pumper and Fair Haven's 1954 American LaFrance quad.
There was even a rig in the process of being restored that showed up in prime paint, and later drafted from the lake. Shaun Dlabik is the owner if the 1959 American LaFrance Series 900 pumper which saw original duty in Milford.
In the 1970's the Philadelphia Fire Department used 200 gpm mini-pumpers as tactical units. One, fully restored, was present.
John Burzichelli, the Deputy Speaker of the New Jersey General Assembly, arrived with his restored 1961 Ward LaFrance Fire Brand model pumper. The Fire Brand was a limited model produced by the former apparatus manufacturer. Burzichelli owns six rigs and is proud to “Keep everything alive.”
John Rieth, a 1st Responder News correspondent, brought along a New Jersey Forest Fire Service 1970 Dodge 4WD brush unit.
All participants were proud of their apparatus, whether privately owned or still owned by their fire company.
Tri-Counties Fire Association President Dave Napien and club historian and photographer, Bob Annitto, were happy with the turn-out and are planning for a larger event with more apparatus and vendors next year.
It might be interesting to note that the muster is held on the last Saturday in June. Years ago, apparatus enthuses gathered at Vallhalla, N.Y., and later Cronton-on-Hudson, N.Y. on the last Saturday in June for a big antique muster. Perhaps this will become a popular replacement?
