In the afternoon of January 17, the Liberty Corner Fire Company was dispatched to a structure fire at 6 Benedict Crescent in Bernards Township. Upon the arrival of Chief Marc Friedman(40-10), he reported that there was heavy smoke coming from the building and a window on the "C" side of the structure had self-ventilated. The IC had, en route, requested the Far Hills - Bedminster Fire Department(Station 29) for mutual aid, and a RIT Team from the VA Fire Department(Station 59). Also responding was the Liberty Corner First Aid Squad, which set up a rehab area.
The first apparatus to arrive was LC Engine 4 (40-104), operated by FF Scott Kessel, and a 1 3/4 inch line was laid to the front door. Firefighters Mike LaCosta and Joe Friedman entered, and made a quick knockdown of what was a fully involved room and contents fire. When Station 29 arrived with its ladder truck, its personnel brought a second line into the structure to assist with overhaul. The remainder of the first floor, and the second floor were searched for extension, and the house was ventilated. The entire first floor suffered extensive smoke damage.
This fire followed on the heels of a fatal MVA to which the fire company responded the evening before.
