LONDONDERRY, NH - Londonderry Fire/Rescue responded on December 20, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. for a motor vehicle accident with reported entrapment. This was just after snow had blanketed the area earlier that day.The first police officer on scene confirmed entrapment with an unconscious patient.
The initial response was Car 2, Engine 2, Rescue 1, and Medic 1. After Car 2 arrived on scene, he reported a car versus tree with heavy entrapment and requested the availability of DHART helicopter. Fire Alarm confirmed DHART was flying and Car 2 requested them to land in the Home Depot parking lot about a half a mile away from the scene.
On arrival all companies went to work providing patient care, doing an initial assessment holding C-spine, applying a collar, providing oxygen and covering the patient with warm blankets.
The vehicle was stabilized and extrication began. Car 2 requested an additional engine from Derry for man power. Derry Engine 1 reported to the scene assisting Londonderry companies with a heavily damaged vehicle that hit a large tree at the driver's door.
All companies worked in unison to remove the roof and doors to gain better access the patient, while also giving themselves better working room to remove the patient who was trapped by the dashboard on her legs. After using multiple sets of jaws and rams, the patient was removed and transported by ambulance to the landing zone were she was loaded into the helicopter and transported into Boston for further care of her injuries which appeared to be a broken leg and head injuries.
This was a lengthy and complicated extrication and both departments should to be commended for their professionalism and dedication to helping a driver who lost control in less than ideal driving conditions.
