DERRY, NH - Derry Fire Department responded to a horrendous car accident in the early morning hours on December 31, 2009.
Fire Alarm began to receive multiple calls at 4:00 a.m. of a car in the water, upside down with a person trapped in the area of 30 Pond Road.
First arriving companies found the late model Audi A4 upside down in a brook with a patient trapped by a severe impact with a tree.
The unrestrained, unconscious victim was found with his head in the water. Derry Fire Department Firefighter Skip Wedge held the patient's head out of the water as other companies from Engine 1 and Rescue 1 went to work performing a complicated extrication using the jaws under poor conditions as the vehicle was leaking gasoline in the water and around the victim. A hose line was stretched and foam was applied to the vehicle.
Derry Fire paramedics requested DHART and provided patient care as he was removed from the vehicle and transported from the scene by Medic 1 to Parkland Medical Center where he was transported by helicopter to a Boston Hospital with severe injuries.
Crews applied absorbent pads and booms down stream from the accident scene to contain gasoline that leaked from the vehicle. The Department of Environmental Services was notified.
The residents of Derry and this victim should be grateful for a highly trained, CAAS accredited professional department with a quick response time.
