Derry Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire located at 14 Maurice Road, April 25, 2012 at 3:36 pm. First due Engine 1 was on scene quickly and Lt. Haggart reported he had a 2.5 story wood frame 40x20 foot single family structure with heavy fire showing and requested a working fire assignment. Engine ones crew made an extremely aggressive interior attack knocking down the bulk of the heavy fire that was rapidly consuming the interior attic space on the A-D corner. The Homeowner was in the driveway and reported everyone was out of the house. He was using a torch to burn weeds from the front walkway, when embers traveled into the landscaping shrubs which quickly ignited, traveling up the front of the home and into the attic, due to the extremely dry conditions in the New England area. Home Owners are urged to use extreme caution when using heat producing equipment. The home sustained heavy damage due to smoke, fire and water. Assisting at the scene was Derry Car 1, engines 1, 2, 3, 4, Tank 1. Mutual aid to scene was Londonderry Medic, Windham Engine, Auburn Rescue, Hampstead Tanker, Chester Tanker, and The Salvation Army. Station coverage was provided by Manchester, Salem and Londonderry. There were no reported injuries. The cause was determined to be accidental.
