LEBANON, ME - The Lebanon Rescue Department, Maine State Police and Lebanon Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on Champion Street on Monday morning, December 28, 2009. The accident was reported at 6:02 a.m.
When emergency crews arrived on scene, they located a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon on its roof in the ditch on Champion Street, just west of Poplar Hill Road.
“The driver advised us that he was heading west on Champion Street when he hit black ice and lost control of the car. He landed on his roof in the ditch. He was able to climb out of the car on his own. He was fortunate he didn’t have a passenger as the entire roof was crushed in on the passenger side. He was also fortunately wearing his seatbelt and his airbags deployed. Besides being shaken up, he was not seriously injured.” Assistant Chief Jason Cole added. “The roads were very slippery from the rain yesterday refreezing overnight. I came across another vehicle off the road on the way to this call and saw several spots where cars had gone off the road. The road crews were out sanding but there’s a lot of area to cover.”
Crews were on scene for about one and a half hours until the vehicle was removed. Traffic was closed to one lane while emergency crews worked at the scene.
The vehicle was totaled in the accident and was towed from the scene.
The driver, a 26-year-old male from Lebanon, was not transported to the hospital. He was alone in the vehicle.
Trooper Kevin Strout of the Maine State Police is investigating the accident.
The road was reopened and the scene cleared at 7:31 a.m.
