LEBANON, ME - The Lebanon Rescue Department, York County Sheriff's Department responded to a motorcycle with serious injuries on Friday evening, September 18, 2009.
The accident was dispatched at 8:10 p.m. The accident was located on Carl Broggi Highway at the entrance to Southern Maine Tool Rental, about 1/4 mile east of the West Lebanon Road. The accident was dispatched as a motorcycle accident verse a sign and the operator was not breathing.
"Fortunately rescue volunteers were teaching a CPR/First Aid class at the rescue station about 1/2 mile from the accident scene and were on scene within a minute of being dispatched to the scene. When they arrived, the male patient was breathing but was seriously injured. He was alone on the motorcycle and was transported by Lebanon Ambulance at the paramedic level to Frisbie with life threatening injuries." Assistant Chief and Public Information Officer Jason Cole advised. "There were witnesses that advised the motorcycle was traveling west on Carl Broggi Highway towards Rochester when it left the roadway and continued in the dirt and grass before striking a sign for the business and the motorcycle then came to rest in the driveway with the male about 6 feet away from the motorcycle. The operator was not wearing a helmet and the Harley Davidson Sportser he was driving was heavily damaged in the accident and had to be towed."
The operator was a 37-year-old male from West Lebanon. His name cannot be released due to medical confidentiality.
Deputy Travis Jones of the York County Sheriff's Department is investigating the accident.
The patient was transported with multiple life threatening injuries to Frisbie Hospital which is only about five miles from the scene. Once stabilized, he may be transferred to Maine Medical Trauma Center.
"This is the same stretch of Carl Broggi Highway that has seen several serious accidents, including the fatal accident that killed a 21 year old male from Massachusetts on May 1, 2009. That accident was about 100 feet away from this serious accident. The Sheriff's Department had been working with us over the past year to try to help with the amount of accidents including putting a speed trailer at the rescue station for several days." Rescue Chief Samantha Cole added.
There were no other vehicles involved in tonights accident. Emergency crews were on scene until about 9:30 p.m. when the motorcycle was removed from the scene. The sheriffs department was still on scene at 10:15 p.m. investigating the scene.
