LEBANON, ME - The Lebanon Rescue Department, Lebanon Fire Department, York County Sheriff’s Department and Maine State Police responded to a three-vehicle accident Monday morning, January 4, 2010.
The accident was reported at 6:20 a.m. and was located on Carl Broggi Highway just west of the intersections of Center and Long Swamp Road.
When emergency crews arrived on scene, they located a large plow truck owned by the Town of Berwick on the side of the road. They also located a 2010 Ford Transit van resting in the ditch with heavy damage. A 2006 Chevrolet plow-truck was located about 250 feet up the road in the ditch.
We were advised by witnesses that the Berwick Town Plow truck was traveling eastbound on Carl Broggi Highway and had put its blinker on to turn right onto Long Swamp Road when the 2010 Ford Transit also traveling East behind the Berwick plow truck went to pass it. A 2006 Chevy Plow truck was traveling westbound on Carl Broggi Highway and the Ford Transit hit the Chevrolet plow-truck and then the side of the Berwick Town Plow truck. The Maine State Police were still on scene at 9am investigating the accident and speaking with witnesses. The Ford Transit Van bounced off the plow truck of the Chevrolet Plow-truck and both of those vehicles appear to be totaled and were towed from the scene. The Berwick Town plow truck had damage to the drivers side, but was able to be driven from the scene.
The driver of the Ford Transit was a 47-year-old male from Rochester, NH. He was wearing his seatbelt, which appears to have played a very significant role in saving him from much more serious injuries. His vehicle was brand new and totaled in the accident. He was transported to Frisbie Hospital in Rochester with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the 2006 Chevrolet plow-truck was a 37-year-old male from North Berwick. He also was wearing his seatbelt which also appears to have played a very significant role in saving him from much more serious injuries. He was evaluated on scene for injuries but was not transported to the hospital by ambulance.
The driver of the Berwick Town Plow truck was a 62-year-old male from Somersworth, NH. He was uninjured in the accident.
Rescue and Fire crews cleared the scene at 7:40 a.m. – Maine State Police remained on scene until about 9:30am investigating the accident and waiting for the vehicles to be towed from the scene.
Fortunately we had two people who were wearing their seatbelts and even though their vehicles were destroyed, neither were seriously injured. Looking at the damage to the vehicles, they were very lucky.
Besides Lebanon Rescue and Lebanon Fire Departments on scene, York County Sheriff’s Department, Maine State Police and Berwick Police were on scene.
Trooper Jeremy Forbes is investigating the accident.
