LEBANON, ME - The Lebanon Rescue Department, York County Sheriff's Department and Lebanon Fire Department responded to a report of a vehicle that was stuck in a flooded area of the road and water was coming into the vehicle and the driver was not able to get out. The incident was located on the Lord Road, about one mile in from the Little River Road. The incident occurred on Saturday, June 20, 2009 and was reported about 1:30 p.m.
Lebanon firefighter Joe Perron arrived on scene first and helped extricate the patient from the car using his 4x4 truck. Firefighter Perron was able to bring the female down the road to meet with the rescue responders.
"This is the second or third car in about two months to get stuck in the same area. This road is not maintained by the Town and is a private road. She advised she was trying to go visit family and her GPS unit told her to take this road and she did. She made it through one large flooded area that was about 2 feet deep in places and then got stuck in the second one. The water was coming into her car and she was understandably upset about what was going on and dialed 911. She is not from the area and did not realize this was a private road. It has rained very hard the past few days and the road is flooded in several areas" Assistant Chief Jason Cole advised.
The first wrecker showed up and was unable to access the vehicle. A second 4x4 wrecker was called in to get the vehicle out.
"Once the vehicle was out of the water, the operator opened the doors and the car had about three or four inches of water through the entire inside. We would also like to remind drivers that no one should ever attempt to cross flooded roads in cars or on foot. Safely turn around and find an alternate route." Assistant Chief Jason Cole added.
The driver was not injured in the incident. She is a 54-year-old female from Buxton, Maine.
Sergeant Roger Hicks of the York County Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.
