LEBANON, ME - The Lebanon Rescue Department, Maine State Police and Lebanon Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident with serious injuries on Monday, April 20, 2009. The accident was reported at 3:22 p.m. The accident occurred near 60 West Lebanon Road about a quarter of a mile in from Route 202 (Carl Broggi Highway).
When emergency crews arrived on scene within a few minutes of the accident being reported, they located one vehicle in the woods and the driver was lying on the ground unconscious, about 25 feet from the car. The vehicle was a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu.
Bystanders advised rescue crews that the female got out of the vehicle, walked a little bit and collapsed. She was unconscious and unresponsive.
The female was transported by Lebanon Ambulance One at the advanced life support level to Frisbie Hospital in Rochester, NH. The female was still unconscious and unresponsive when she was loaded into the ambulance. Additional advanced life support responders from Frisbie Memorial Hospital were called in to assist Lebanon Rescue crews.
“The driver, believed to be an 18-year-old female from Berwick, Maine, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. She was traveling south on West Lebanon Road when her vehicle went off the road on the right hand side of the road, crossed the roadway and then went off the left side of the road, striking several trees and rocks. She was unconscious and unresponsive when rescue crews arrived on scene. She was quickly transported to Frisbie Hospital in Rochester by Lebanon Ambulance.” Public Information Officer Jason Cole advised. “It appears she was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the accident and the airbags did deploy. She got out of the car on her own and then collapsed. When we arrived on scene, several bystanders were trying to help the patient including a registered nurse.”
West Lebanon Road was closed to one lane. Traffic traveling south on West Lebanon Road was diverted down Upper Guinea Road. The traffic traveling north on West Lebanon Road was allowed to pass the scene after rescue loaded the patient.
Emergency units cleared the scene around 5:00pm.
