LEBANON, ME - The Lebanon Fire Department, Lebanon Rescue Department, Milton, NH Fire Department and Rochester, NH Fire Department responded to a garage fire at 242 Shapleigh Road on Sunday morning, November 22, 2009. The fire was reported at 8:51 a.m.
Initial radio dispatch advised a fire had started in some newspapers outside a stove in the garage.
While crews were enroute, heavy black smoke could be seen several miles away in Sanford. Rochester and Milton Fire Departments were requested to the scene.
When fire apparatus arrived, they reported heavy smoke and fire conditions. The garage and house were located up a long dirt driveway and a feeder line was established to the attack pumper. This is a rural area so there are no hydrants. Milton Engine 3 arrived on scene and was sent up to the area of Merchants Row to set up a draft.
There was an antique car inside the garage that was destroyed and two pick-up trucks outside of the garage also were damaged by the fire.
Fire crews did a great job knocking down the fire and saving the house which was about 15 feet from the garage. The side of the house was scorched, but fire crews did a great job saving the exposure.
At 11:23 a.m., the fire was reported to be out and crews were cleaning up. Mutual aid crews were released from the scene at 11:33 a.m. Lebanon Rescue units cleared the scene at 11:40 a.m.
Central Maine Power also responded to the scene.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Lebanon Fire Department.
