LEBANON, ME - The Lebanon Rescue Department and Maine State Police responded to a motor vehicle accident with injury on Friday, February 19, 2010. The accident was reported at the intersection of Center Road and Upper Cross Road and involved a school bus owned by MSAD 60, the school district for Lebanon. This accident was reported at 7:32 a.m. to the rescue personnel.
Upon arrival of rescue units, they located a red Ford Ranger pick-up truck that had rear-ended a 2007 GMC school bus.
It was later determined while working at this accident scene, that the same Ford Ranger truck had been involved in another series of accidents on the Milton Mills Road and Depot Roads. The operator of the truck who had been rear ended had reported this Ford Ranger truck had rear-ended him several times on the Milton Mills Road and Depot Road in Lebanon.
From what we have been advised, the school bus had just stopped at the intersection coming off of Upper Cross Road to turn right onto Center Road. He then was struck from behind by the pick-up truck. The driver of the pick-up truck was incoherent and not alert. It appears he was suffering from a medical condition that probably caused the accidents. While at the scene, it was determined that this same subject was involved in another accident about 2 miles up the road on Depot Road that had occurred just prior to this accident. Rescue crews responded to that scene to make sure that operator was ok. It was reported that the same Ford Ranger pick-up truck had been traveling down the Milton Mills Road and Depot Road in Lebanon and kept striking a 2005 Ford F-150 pick-up truck that was operating in front of it. The Ford Ranger struck the rear of the Ford F-150 several times and lost its bumper and headlight the last time they struck. It appears the subject was suffering a medical emergency and did not intentionally hit either of the vehicles, he didn’t even realize he was in multiple accidents. The driver of the Ford F-150 that was rear ended several times during the several mile drive down Milton Mills Road and Depot Road was not injured, but was shook up from the incident.
The driver of the Ford Ranger truck, a 76 year old male from Acton, Maine, was taken by Lebanon Ambulance to Goodall Hospital in Sanford, Maine with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. He was wearing his seatbelt and his truck suffered extensive front-end damage and had to be towed from the scene.
The driver of the 2007 GMC School Bus was a 67-year-old male from East Lebanon. He was not injured in the accident and had his seatbelt on. The bus suffered minor damage to the rear of the bus and was drivable.
The driver of the 2005 Ford F-150 that was involved in the initial accidents along Milton Mills Road and Depot Road was an adult male from Acton, Maine. He was not injured, just shook up from being struck several times along several miles of the roadway. His truck suffered minor rear end damage.
Crews cleared the scene around 8:30am.
Responding to the scene were the Maine State Police and an ambulance and first response/command vehicle from Lebanon Rescue.
Trooper Kevin Stout of the Maine State Police are investigating the accidents.
