WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD - On February 28, 2009 calls came in shortly before 9:00 o’clock that night reporting a fire at 7812 Sharpsburg Pike. Fairplay Fire Company along with several mutual aid companies were dispatched out on the call at 8:57 p.m. for a mobile home fire. Engine 121 from Fairplay arrived to find fire showing and immediately requested the working fire assignment started.
Firefighters worked to make an aggressive attack on the blaze as the additional units requested were dispatched out. Chief 1 from Sharpsburg Fire Company then arrived on the scene assuming Sharpsburg Pike Command. Once Command assessed the scene, a request was made for a Fire Marshal to respond.
Firefighters worked to gain control of the blaze as EMS from Sharpsburg tended to the occupant of the residence for burns and smoke inhalation. Firefighters were able to gain control within twenty minutes after their arrival on the scene. Command reported fire knocked down but advised he was holding all units for extensive overhaul around 9:15 p.m.
Firefighters worked on the scene for nearly an additional hour conducting overhaul operations. The fire is believed to be accidental in nature. The occupant cared for by Sharpsburg EMS was transported to Washington County Trauma Center for further treatment. No other injuries were reported during the incident. Command reported operations complete and terminated Command at 10:09 p.m. at which time remaining units on the scene began clearing the incident.
Fairplay Fire Co.12 responded out with assistance from Sharpsburg Fire Co.1, Williamsport Fire Co.2, Boonsboro Fire Co.6, Boonsboro Rescue Co.69, Sharpsburg Rescue Co.19, Emergency Air Unit 25, and Rehab Unit 255. Crews from Funkstown Fire Co.10 and Special Operations 20 also responded on the call but were canceled per command once operations were deemed under control. When released, Funkstown filled in at Company 12 until Fairplay crews were able to clear the scene.
