On the evening of June 29th, Washington County Dispatch took reports of a structure fire to the rear of the housing complex on Apple Blossom Court. Crews from Halfway were quickly dispatched out with Funkstown and Williamsport crews at 17:42 hours. As crews responded, dispatch received additional information making them believe the structure involved was located on Nursery Road off of Virginia Avenue. This information was quickly reported to responding units and was quickly confirmed by Chief Ringer of Halfway Co.26 who was the first to arrive on the scene.
Chief Ringer arrived on the scene minutes after dispatch to find an abandoned house involved and reported smoke coming from the house to dispatch. Chief Ringer assessed the scene deeming that units were going to remain in defensive mode only. Chief Ringer held a minimal amount of units to protect the wooded area keeping the fire from spreading but allowing the blaze to free burn. Firefighters remained on the scene for an hour and a half watching the dilapidated house burn down.
At 19:20 hours, Chief Ringer reported operations complete as onlookers watched smoke rise from the foundation where the remaining embers of the house continued to smolder.
The house involved had been abandoned for sometime. No injuries were reported during the fire and Halfway Fire Company made sure someone from their department checked the foundation periodically to make sure the smoldering debris was well contained.
Funkstown Fire Co.10, Williamsport Fire Co.2 and Rehab Unit 255 assisted the Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway on the incident. Williamsport Fire transferred their Engine into Station 26 for a short duration until crews on the scene could be freed up.
