The tractor-trailer travels several hundred yards after being struck.
At 9:21 a.m. on October 4, 2008, Clear Spring Engine 41, Rescue Squad 4 and a Medic unit from Company 49 in Clear Spring were dispatched to a PIA on I-70 around the 14 mile marker east bound. E.-41 was first to arrive and found a late model Ford Explorer in the slow lane of traffic w/ extensive damage to the front of the vehicle. They also noticed a tractor-trailer several hundred yards down the road parked on the shoulder.
A quick size-up revealed that all victims were out of the vehicle w/ no apparent injuries. After checking with the driver of the tractor trailer and learning that he was uninjured also, firefighters began to clear the debris from the interstate and containing a minor fluid spill.
After the arrival of the Maryland State Police, the vehicle was pushed onto the shoulder and the scene was turned over to MSP.
The driver of the pick-up told firefighters that he had flipped his sun visor down to check a schedule on the reverse side and when he flipped it back up, “there was the truck”.
