On December 4th, Washington County Emergency Communications Center took reports of a serious accident on Interstate 70 in the area of Clear Spring. Callers reporting a single vehicle off the road just east of Exit 18 flooded the 9-1-1 center that afternoon. Emergency crews from Clear Spring Fire & EMS Companies were dispatched out on the incident at 12:50 hours.
Engine 42 from Clear Spring Fire arrived to find a single vehicle off the road into a tree. Chief Mike Reid of Clear Spring assumed command upon arrival reporting they had one entrapped in the vehicle. Initial crews were faced with a patient heavily entangled in the wreckage. Once crews were able to make access to the patient and command was able to fully assess the scene, he reported the patient to be a Priority 4 and requested the Medical Examiner notified and had all incoming units reduce their rate.
Upon arrival of Rescue Squad 4, Command was passed to Lieutenant Jenkins of Company 4. Crews from Clear Spring stabilized all hazards and remained on the scene with Maryland State Police till the arrival of the medical examiner. Once crews were finished with assisting the M.E. and MSP, command was terminated and remaining Clear Spring crews cleared the incident at 14:37 hours at which time the scene was turned over to Maryland State Police.
One lane of the Interstate 70 remained shut down for several hours while MSP conducted their investigation into the crash. Witness reports say the truck involved began to go off the right side of the road when the driver appeared to overcompensate and crossed back over both lanes of traffic into the median. No other information on a cause has been released.
