At 06:49 hrs. The Washington County 9-1-1- center received a call reporting a smoke detector activation with fire in the wall at 11459 Charles Mill Rd. Box 4-5 was struck and units from Clear Spring , Hancock, Williamsport, Maugansville as well a Medic 491 responded.
Clear Spring Engine 41 and Chief 4 arrived on the scene at 07:07 hrs and found a two story, single family dwelling with fire through the roof and Chief 4 established command. Initial scene size-up found on the entire 2nd. floor and involved with approximately 1/3rd. of the roof burned off. Command immediately ordered all operations into defensive mode and requested a working fire assignment which brought additional units from Halfway, Washington County Air Unit 25, Rehab255, Para-Medic 1810, Squad 202 from Washington County Special Operation and Rescue Squad 59 from Hancock as well as Franklin Co. Engine Tanker 9 from Mercersburg PA.
Fire fighters efforts were hampered by the narrowness of the road and a single lane driveway leading to the house that was about ¼ of a mile long.
With the amount of fire load and fire involvement, and after consultation between the Command Staff (Chief 13 Garrett, Lt. 4 Reid, Sgt. 4 Gray), the owner/occupant and FM26 (Ernst) the decision was made by Command to do a controlled burn of the remaining structure. All operations were downgraded to a standby mode by 08:00 hours. Command was transferred to Sgt. Kerrington Gray at 0815 and an orderly release of units began at 08;28. At 11:36 all units had been released with the exception of Clear Spring Tanker 4 which remained on the scene with 3 personnel until 23:55 hrs.
Total loss is estimate by the Office of the State Fire Marshal at $149,000.00.
The house was constructed of logs and covered with siding and is reported to have been originally built in the late 1700's to early 1800's. No injuries were reported among the 47 firefighters responding to the call
