Cascade, MD - On January 24, crews from Smithsburg Fire in Washington County and Blue Ridge Fire out of Franklin County responded to a car fire on Cushman Avenue in the old Fort Ritchie Complex in Cascade. Washington County Dispatchers took the call for the fire and dispatched units from Blue Ridge Company 4 and Smithsburg Company 7 around 00:29 hours.
Franklin Assistant Chief was the first unit to arrive on the scene of the fire to find it located on North Boyd Street off of Cushman Avenue. Assistant Chief 4 reported two vehicles well off upon his arrival to dispatch. Engines from Companies 4 and 7 arrived shortly after Assistant Chief 4 and began their attack on the vehicles. It was later found that both vehicles were parked at that location and not in motion at the time of the fire. Maryland State FM26 was requested and responded to the incident scene.
Crews from Smithsburg and Blue Ridge were able to conduct a quick knockdown of the fire in a matter off minutes after their arrival. Crews remained on the scene for nearly and hour after knockdown to secure the scene and assist FM26 with anything he may have needed. FD units were able to clear the scene by 03:30 hours that morning. The cause is still under investigation by the State FM’s Office.
