On June 27th, Washington County received reports of a vehicle accident on Lappans Road between Boonsboro and Fairplay. Dispatchers received several conflicting reports placing the call in the area of Devils Backbone Park. Crews from Boonsboro Fire Company 6 along with Boonsboro Rescue Company 69 were dispatched out around 16:59 hours that afternoon.
Boonsboro Rescue Engine 61 was the first arriving unit to find a car versus pickup truck west of the park just outside their first due. Assistant Chief Brandenburg from Company 6 assessed the incident and confirmed two entrapments in the car. Operations were placed on Tactical Channel 3 and Assistant Chief Brandenburg assumed Lappans Road Command. Crews were faced with a car that was shoved into the guardrail after being struck by the pickup truck that crossed the centerline. With the location confirmed, Chief Lenard Heller from Fairplay Company 12 responded to assist due to the location being in his jurisdiction.
As crews from Boonsboro Fire & Rescue companies worked to extricate the patients from the car, Command requested a second ALS unit to the scene from Sharpsburg EMS Company 19. Shortly after the request of the second unit, crews were able to have the first patient extricated. The second patient was able to be quickly removed shortly after at 17:20 hours. The third patient involved in the truck refused treatment by EMS. By 17:30 hours, all patients had been packaged and were enroute to Washington County Trauma Center.
Boonsboro and Sharpsburg transported both patients as Priority 2 patients. Boonsboro Fire Company along with Chief Heller remained on the scene for a short period after all patients had been transported awaiting the removal of both vehicles involved. Once all hazards were removed, FD operations were complete and Command was terminated at 17:53 hours and crews began clearing the scene.
