Cascade, MD- Firefighters were awaken early on March 31st for a reported house fire at 24800 block of Linden Avenue. Washington County Dispatch took a call reporting a house fire just off of Cascade Road. Crews arrived to find two houses well involved in flames with extension into a third residence. Chief Kirk Morgan of Leitersburg Fire Co.9 arrived and assumed command of the structure fires.
Due to very dry conditions, the fires spread quickly from one home to another. Two of the houses were deemed a total loss while another house sustained major damage and a fourth house across the street sustained exterior damage due to the heat put out by the fire. Fire also quickly spread into the adjoining wooded area.
Firefighters on the blaze had command in effect for the structures on fire, but a separate incident was unfolding with the rapidly spreading woods fire. This constituted a second command, which was headed up by Assistant Chief Sam Ginn of Smithsburg Fire Co.7. Additional crews from as far away as Fairfield Pennsylvania and Boonsboro Maryland were called to the 2 Alarm Blaze.
Crews remained on the scene well into the early morning hours dowsing hot spots and assisting Maryland State FM26. Crews returned several times later that day to dowse down smoldering remnants in the basements of the destroyed homes as a precaution due to the dry conditions.
The State Fire Marshals Office reports the origin of the fire to be exterior in nature from a grass fire started from a burn barrel. The preliminary cause is still under investigation. The FM’s confirm that the homes at 24808 & 24810 Pen Mar Road were totally destroyed while 24812 Pen Mar had damage to the second floor along with roof damage and 24801 Linden Avenue had its vinyl siding melted off.
Leitersburg Fire Company was assisted by Smithsburg Fire, Longmeadow Fire, Boonsboro Fire, Mt. Aetna Fire, Wolfsville Fire, Thurmont Fire, Emmitsburg Fire, Mont Alto Fire, Waynesboro Fire, Blue Ridge Summit Fire, Fountaindale Fire, Fairfield Fire, Community Rescue Service, Smithsburg EMS, Washington County Special Operations 20, Air Unit, Rehab Unit, Maryland State Forestry, Maryland State Fire Marshals Office, and American Red Cross.
