WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD - At 11:22 a.m. on February 19, 2010, Box 4-10 was struck for a house fire at 12719 Spickler Road near Clear Spring. Companies responded from Clear Spring Co 4 and 49, Williamsport Co 2, Maugansville Co 13, Halfway Co 26 and Mercersburg PA Co. 9.
Chief 49 from Clear Spring Ambulance arrived at the scene at 11:28 a.m. reporting heavy smoke coming from the second floor. Clear Spring Fire Company Engine 42 went on scene at 11:29 a.m. and attacked the fire with 1¾ inch lines. Chief 4 arrived on location at 11:32, established Spickler Road Command and requested a working fire assignment.
As other companies began to arrive they were assigned duties as needed. Washington Co. Special Operations Chief Bently (Co 20) was assigned Division 1, Chief Ball from the Williamsport Fire Department (Co 2) was assigned Division 2 , the Director of Emergency Services of the County was assigned Safety, Deputy Chief 4 from Clear Spring Fire was assigned to secure the utilities and Chief Miller from Clear Spring Ambulance (Co49) was assigned Rehab. Engine 271 from Longmeadow was dispatched at 12:17 and Franklin County Engine 32 at 12:39 for additional staffing.
Primary searches of both floors were conducted after the structure was vented via PPV with negative results.
Strong winds and melting piles of knee deep snow hindered firefighters’ attempts to get the fire under control. The fire which started in the kitchen, rapidly spread up the inside of the balloon construction frame residence. The fire also burned through the first-floor ceiling and into the attic, destroying every level of the house. The fire caused an estimated $120,000 in damage to the house and its contents according to State Fire Marshal Ed Ernst.
The fire was brought under control at 12:48 p.m. with command being terminated at 3:09 p.m. after sixty firefighters from nine companies responded to the blaze.
No injuries were reported.
