WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD - On June 4th, Washington County 911 received reports of a house on fire in the Kieffer Funk Road area of Washington County. Emergency crews from Smithsburg Fire Company 7 were dispatched out at 9:12 pm along with crews from Leitersburg, Mount Aetna, Maugansville, Longmeadow and Community Rescue Service. Emergency crews from Smithsburg had heavy smoke in the area as they approached the scene and Deputy Chief Rohrer of Company 7 arrived to find a working fire. Rohrer reported an abandoned house fully involved and assumed Kieffer Funk Command. Dispatch immediately struck the working fire assignment, bringing in an additional engine from Funkstown, along with a medic unit from Smithsburg EMS and the Emergency Air Unit and Rehab Unit. As crews worked to establish water supply, Command assessed the situation to find crews having access problems and immediately requested two additional brush units, along with the an urban interface engine out of Funkstown Fire Company 10 to the scene. Crews worked to keep the fire contained to the house, bringing the blaze under control around 11:11pm when command reported the fire knocked down. Smithsburg Engine Co. 7 was assisted by Leitersburg Fire Co. 9, Mt. Aetna Fire Co. 16, Maugansville Fire Co. 13, Longmeadow Fire Co. 27, Funkstown Fire Co. 10, Community Rescue Co. 75, Smithsburg EMS Co. 79, Washington County Emergency Air Unit 25 and Rehab Unit 255, along with the State Fire Marshals Office. Crews remained on scene until 12:24am when Command was terminated. The remains of the structure continued to smolder into the next day. The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation by the State Fire Marshals Office. No injuries were reported during the incident.
